Glutathione supplementation suppresses muscle fatigue induced by prolonged exercise via improved aerobic metabolism

Glutathione supplementation suppresses muscle fatigue induced by prolonged exercise via improved aerobic metabolism Abstract Backgrounds: Glutathione is an endogenous redox couple in animal cells and plays important roles in antioxidant defense and detoxification, although it is unknown if oral glutathione supplementation affects exercise-induced physiological changes. The present study investigated the effect of glutathione intake on exercise-induced muscle metabolism and fatigue in mice and humans. Methods: ICR mice were divided into 4 groups: sedentary control, sedentary supplemented with glutathione (2.0%, 5 μL/g body weight), exercise control, and exercise supplemented with glutathione. After 2 weeks, the exercise groups ran on a treadmill at 25 m/min for 30 min. Immediately post-exercise, intermuscular pH was measured, and hind limb muscle and blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters. In a double-blind, cross-over study, 8 healthy men (35.9 ± 2.0 y) were administered either glutathione (1 g/d) or placebo for 2 weeks. Then, they exercised on a cycle ergometer at 40% maximal heart rate for 60 min. Psychological state and blood biochemical parameters were examined after exercise. Results: In the mouse experiment, post-exercise plasma non-esterified fatty acids were significantly lower in the exercise supplemented with glutathione group (820 ± 44 mEq/L) compared with the exercise control group (1152 ± 61 mEq/L). Intermuscular pH decreased with exercise (7.17 ± 0.01); however, this reduction was prevented by glutathione supplementation (7.23 ± 0.02). The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α protein and mitochondrial DNA levels were significantly higher in the sedentary supplemented with glutathione group compared with the sedentary control group (25% and 53% higher, respectively). In the human study, the elevation of blood lactate was suppressed by glutathione intake (placebo, 3.4 ± 1.1 mM; glutathione, 2.9 ± 0.6 mM). Fatigue-related psychological factors were significantly decreased in the glutathione trial compared with the placebo trial. Conclusions: These results suggest that glutathione supplementation improved lipid metabolism and acidification in skeletal muscles during exercise, leading to less muscle fatigue. Glutathione as an oral whitening agent: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Glutathione as an oral whitening agent: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study Abstract Objective: To determine whether orally administered glutathione, 500 mg per day for 4 weeks, affects the skin melanin index, when compared with placebo. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, two-arm, placebo-controlled study was set in the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, a teaching hospital affiliated with a medical school. Sixty otherwise healthy medical students were randomized to receive either glutathione capsules, 500 mg/day in two divided doses, or placebo for 4 weeks. The main outcome was mean reduction of melanin indices measured at six different sites. Several secondary outcomes, including UV spots, were recorded by VISIA™. Efficacies of glutathione and placebo were compared by ANCOVA with baseline values as co-variates. Results: Sixty participants enrolled and completed the study. At 4 weeks, the melanin indices decreased consistently at all six sites in subjects who received glutathione. The reductions were statistically significantly greater than those receiving placebo at two sites, namely the right side of the face and the sun-exposed left forearm (p-values = 0.021 and 0.036, respectively). This was similarly reflected in the changes in the number of UV spots, as measured by VISIA. Both glutathione and placebo were very well tolerated. Conclusion: Oral glutathione administration results in a lightening of skin color in a small number of subjects. However, long-term safety has not been established and warrants more extensive clinical trials. Read More

The Effect of Cysteine Peptide Ingestion on Skin Brightness, a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group Human Clinical Trial

The Effect of Cysteine Peptide Ingestion on Skin Brightness, a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group Human Clinical Trial Abstract Glutathione (GSH) is present in almost all human cells and has a beneficial effect on human skin brightness. Cysteinylglycine (Cys-Gly) and γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-Glu-Cys) are GSH synthesis components. In this study, we defined glutathione (GSH), cysteinylglycine (Cys-Gly), and γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-Glu-Cys) as cysteine peptide and performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of orally administered cysteine peptide on human skin brightness using a CM-26d portable spectrophotometer in healthy males and females aged between 20 and 65 years old. Eligible participants were randomly allocated into three groups (cysteine peptide 45 mg: n = 16, 90 mg: n = 15, and placebo: n = 16). Each subject ingested six tablets every day for 12 weeks, and skin brightness was measured at 0, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. As a result, the 45 mg group exhibited arm brightening in a time-dependent manner, and a significant difference was observed compared to the placebo at week 12 (p = 0.028). Moreover, no serious adverse events and changes related to 270 mg study food were observed in the safety trial. Here, we suggest that cysteine peptide is a promising and safe compound for human skin brightness. Efficacy of glutathione for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: an open-label, single-arm, multicenter, pilot study

Efficacy of glutathione for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: an open-label, single-arm, multicenter, pilot study Abstract Background: Glutathione plays crucial roles in the detoxification and antioxidant systems of cells and has been used to treat acute poisoning and chronic liver diseases by intravenous injection. This is a first study examining the therapeutic effects of oral administration of glutathione in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: The study was an open label, single arm, multicenter, pilot trial. Thirty-four NAFLD patients diagnosed using ultrasonography were prospectively evaluated. All patients first underwent intervention to improve their lifestyle habits (diet and exercise) for 3 months, followed by treatment with glutathione (300 mg/day) for 4 months. We evaluated their clinical parameters before and after glutathione treatment. We also quantified liver fat and fibrosis using vibration-controlled transient elastography. The primary outcome of the study was the change in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Results: Twenty-nine patients finished the protocol. ALT levels significantly decreased following treatment with glutathione for 4 months. In addition, triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids, and ferritin levels also decreased with glutathione treatment. Following dichotomization of ALT responders based on a median 12.9% decrease from baseline, we found that ALT responders were younger in age and did not have severe diabetes compared with ALT non-responders. The controlled attenuation parameter also decreased in ALT responders. Conclusions: This pilot study demonstrates the potential therapeutic effects of oral administration of glutathione in practical dose for patients with NAFLD. Large-scale clinical trials are needed to verify its efficacy. Trial registration: UMIN000011118 (date of registration: July 4, 2013). Keywords: Controlled attenuation parameter; Glutathione; Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.   Read More

Unlocking the Power of Glutathione: Dr. Gina Shares Why This Master Antioxidant Deserves the Spotlight

Glutathione might not be a household name yet—but Dr. Gina Nick is on a mission to change that. As a renowned naturopathic physician, researcher, and formulator based in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Gina has spent decades helping people reclaim their health through holistic approaches. In a recent podcast interview, she delved into the science and real-world impact of glutathione—a molecule she calls “the master antioxidant”—and why it’s foundational to detoxification, inflammation control, and long-term wellness. What Is Glutathione? Glutathione is a tripeptide made up of three amino acids: glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine. It is naturally produced in every cell of the human body, with particularly high concentrations in the liver—our main detoxification hub. According to Dr. Gina, this powerhouse antioxidant binds to harmful toxins and neutralizes them so the body can safely eliminate them. In doing so, it protects cells, reduces disease-causing oxidative stress, and supports healthy immune, cardiovascular, and brain function. “In simple terms, it helps get the garbage out so your body can function at its best,” Dr. Gina explained. Inflammation: The Silent Saboteur One of glutathione’s most essential roles is in fighting silent inflammation—the low-grade, internal inflammation that often flies under the radar but underpins most chronic diseases, from heart conditions and high blood pressure to cognitive decline. “Since the pandemic, more people understand what inflammation is, but we still underestimate how much silent inflammation affects our everyday health,” said Dr. Gina. “Glutathione is one of the best tools we have to combat that.” Why Don’t More People Know About It? Despite the over 100,000 clinical studies available on glutathione, awareness remains surprisingly low. Even Dr. Gina admits that while she used glutathione in clinical practice for years, it wasn’t until she conducted deeper research—on assignment for a nutraceutical company—that she fully grasped the molecule’s power. That experience inspired her to not only educate more people about glutathione but also to make it accessible. The result? Her signature product: Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks. Supporting Glutathione Naturally While supplementation can be beneficial, Dr. Gina emphasizes that lifestyle and dietary habits matter just as much—if not more—when it comes to maintaining healthy glutathione levels. Here are her top recommendations: Manage Stress: Chronic psychological or environmental stress depletes glutathione. Spending time in nature and listening to natural sounds can reduce cortisol by up to 60%, helping to preserve glutathione. Eat Glutathione-Rich Foods: Avocados, strawberries, broccoli, kale, garlic, and grass-fed red meat are excellent sources. Sulfur-containing foods in particular help support production. Avoid Environmental Toxins: Choose organic produce when possible, limit exposure to pollution, and read ingredient labels carefully to avoid hidden chemicals. Start Small: Whether it’s growing herbs on your windowsill or swapping packaged snacks for whole foods, every step helps reduce the toxic burden. Supplementation and Safety Dr. Gina is a strong advocate for working with qualified healthcare professionals—especially for individuals on medication or managing chronic conditions like hypertension. “Glutathione is naturally produced in the body, so it’s generally very safe,” she noted. “However, because it supports liver detoxification, it can speed up how medications are processed.” That’s why her Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Stick formulation includes not just glutathione, but supporting nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, and glycine—all of which help recycle and maintain reduced (active) glutathione levels without overwhelming the system. The Pixie Stick Breakthrough Traditional glutathione supplements often taste bitter or unpleasant due to their sulfuric content. Dr. Gina’s innovative “Pixie Stick” format solves that issue with a sugar-free, sweet-tasting powder that even children enjoy. “My goal was to create something so good you actually look forward to taking it,” she said. “It tastes great and doesn’t compromise on efficacy.” Beyond Prevention: Real Results Glutathione’s benefits aren’t just theoretical. Dr. Gina shared the story of a patient—a judge skeptical of supplements—who saw her perimenopausal symptoms disappear within weeks of taking Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks. When she stopped, the symptoms returned just as quickly. “That kind of dramatic improvement, especially without hormonal intervention, speaks volumes,” said Dr. Gina. Final Thoughts: Health Starts with You As the conversation wrapped up, Dr. Gina left listeners with this reminder: “Don’t underestimate the impact stress has on your health—mentally, emotionally, and physically. Your body has an incredible ability to heal when given the right tools. Glutathione is one of them.” Check Out Dr. Gina’s interview on High Blood Pressure Lifestyle with Donna Williams Here!

How Glutathione Can Supercharge Your Health—And Your Business

It’s not every day that a supplement earns a nickname like Vitamin G, but then again, glutathione isn’t your average health trend. In her recent appearance on The Taran Reeves Show, world-renowned naturopathic physician Dr. Gina Nick unpacked the incredible potential of glutathione—not just for physical wellness, but for sharper thinking, hormone balance, and entrepreneurial success. And if you’ve never heard of glutathione before, that’s exactly the problem Dr. Gina is on a mission to fix. “I’m passionate about making glutathione a household name,” she told Taran. “It’s the master antioxidant, and most people are deficient—especially women juggling careers, families, and nonstop stress.” From brain fog to burnout, Dr. Gina’s message was clear: When you support your body with glutathione, everything—from your immune system to your decision-making—gets a powerful upgrade. What Is Glutathione and Why Should You Care? Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant made of three amino acids—glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine. It plays a vital role in: Detoxifying harmful substances like heavy metals, environmental toxins, and excess hormones Reducing inflammation in the brain and body Protecting mitochondria (your cellular powerhouses) from damage Supporting immune function and hormone regulation According to Dr. Gina, nearly everyone—especially women approaching perimenopause or managing high stress—is running low on this crucial compound. “Glutathione helps balance hormones, calm inflammation, and improve mental clarity. Without enough of it, your brain and body are just trying to survive instead of thrive.” Healthier Leaders Build Healthier Businesses It’s no coincidence that Dr. Gina chose to appear on a podcast focused on visionaries and entrepreneurs. As a business owner and single mom herself, she knows firsthand how easily burnout can derail success. “I believe the health of your business reflects the health of the person running it,” she explained. “If you’re foggy, inflamed, or dealing with hormone chaos, how can you make strategic decisions? You need your mind and body working with you, not against you.” Her go-to solution? A product she developed called Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks, sugar-free glutathione pixie sticks that taste as good as they are effective. “Honestly, I made it for my daughter,” Dr. Gina shared. “I wanted to give her—and every kid—a way to get brain and immune support in a fun, approachable form. But now, I take them myself every day. They help me stay clear-headed, energized, and grounded through everything.” Why Most Supplements Fall Short Dr. Gina emphasized that not all glutathione products are created equal. Many capsule forms aren’t absorbed well in the body. IV versions can be effective, but they’re costly, inconvenient, and can deplete key minerals if not used properly. Her formula uses Cetria®, a clinically studied, bioavailable form of glutathione shown to raise levels in the bloodstream—even when taken orally. Combined with essential co-factors like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, and glycine, Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks offer a full-spectrum immune and detoxification boost in one tiny stick. Why It’s Especially Critical for Women Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and menopause often trigger inflammation, anxiety, and insomnia. Glutathione helps clear excess hormones, reduces neuroinflammation, and regulates mood—making it a secret weapon for women navigating these transitions. In fact, many of Dr. Gina’s patients reported reduced hot flashes, improved sleep, and better focus—without needing hormone therapy—just by taking her glutathione formula. “When your brain and hormones are in balance, everything improves: your energy, your relationships, your ability to lead. It’s foundational.” Glutathione for Kids, Too? Yes—and that was part of the vision from the beginning. During the COVID pandemic, Dr. Gina began experimenting with safe, food-based doses of glutathione that could support her daughter’s immunity and brain function. The result: a sugar-free, kid-approved formula that tastes like candy but actually helps kids think better, feel better, and fight off illness. “My dream is to see one of these pixie sticks in every child’s lunchbox,” she said. How to Choose the Right Glutathione Supplement If you’re shopping outside the U.S., Dr. Gina recommends looking for products that use Cetria® glutathione, as it’s backed by clinical research. She also encourages working with a practitioner who understands functional medicine and supplementation—especially if you’re managing chronic illness, leaky gut, or hormone imbalances. Final Takeaway: Health Is Your Greatest Business Strategy Whether you’re a mom, an entrepreneur, or both, taking care of your physical and mental health isn’t optional—it’s essential. “When you support your detoxification system with glutathione,” Dr. Gina said, “you’re not just protecting your body. You’re sharpening your mind. You’re showing up better for your family. And you’re creating a solid foundation for success in every area of life.” Check Out Dr. Gina’s interview on The Tarryn Reeves Show Here!

Why Glutathione Is the Most Important Antioxidant—and How Dr. Gina Is Making It a Household Name

In a world where chronic illness, environmental toxins, and mental health struggles are becoming more prevalent, Dr. Gina Nick is leading a quiet revolution—one sweet-tasting pixie stick at a time. A globally recognized naturopathic physician, researcher, and formulator based in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Gina has spent the last two decades immersed in the science of supplements and holistic healing. But there’s one molecule she believes has the power to change lives more than any other: glutathione. Often dubbed the “master antioxidant,” glutathione is finally having its moment—and Dr. Gina is at the forefront of its rise. Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant You Probably Haven’t Heard Of Despite being naturally produced in every cell of the body, glutathione remains unfamiliar to most people outside the functional medicine world. Yet according to Dr. Gina, this unsung hero is essential to almost every major system in the body. “Glutathione protects our cells from damage, detoxifies harmful substances, balances immune function, and even shields the brain from inflammation,” Dr. Gina explains. “It’s foundational to health—and we need it now more than ever.” Produced in high concentrations in the liver, glutathione binds to free radicals, environmental toxins, and heavy metals, helping the body eliminate them before they wreak havoc. It also supports mitochondrial health, reduces neuroinflammation, and regulates the immune response—boosting it when needed, calming it when overactive. From Detox to Daily Essential Dr. Gina’s passion for glutathione began early in her career when one of her first patients, a recovering heroin addict, reported dramatic improvements after treatment. That experience planted a seed. Years later, when her young nephew was diagnosed with autism, Dr. Gina was determined to find a way to get glutathione into his system—but struggled with the bad-tasting formulas on the market. Her mission was clear: create a bioavailable, kid-friendly, sugar-free glutathione supplement that actually tasted good. “I wanted something that tasted like candy—but with the opposite effect of candy,” she says. “Something that would nourish the brain, support detox, and be easy for parents and kids to incorporate into their routines.” Enter: Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks Inspired by this vision, Dr. Gina formulated Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks, a fruit punch-flavored glutathione pixie stick that’s as effective as it is enjoyable. Using glycine (a naturally sweet amino acid and one of glutathione’s own building blocks) and stevia, she developed a product that even children love. Her nephew affectionately calls it “Gina Juice,” and her daughter proudly shares it with friends at school. But Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks are not just for kids—they are designed for anyone looking to optimize their health, improve cognitive function, or support daily detoxification. “In today’s world, we’re exposed to more toxins than ever. Our bodies are constantly working to keep up,” Dr. Gina says. “Taking glutathione isn’t about occasional detoxing—it’s about supporting your body every single day.” Why Supplementation Matters While certain foods—like cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and grass-fed meats—can help stimulate the body’s own glutathione production, Dr. Gina notes that most people are still chronically depleted. The culprit? Environmental exposure, chronic stress, and poor nutrition. “What people don’t realize is that the recycling of glutathione in the body uses up vital nutrients—like magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins,” she explains. “So it’s not just about giving your body glutathione, it’s about giving it the co-factors it needs to maintain healthy levels.” Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks include those co-factors too—making it a complete, holistic approach to glutathione support. The Brain, the Immune System, and Beyond Dr. Gina is particularly passionate about glutathione’s impact on brain health. “The brain is more vulnerable to toxins than any other part of the body,” she says. “Low glutathione in the brain is linked to conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, anxiety, and cognitive decline.” But its benefits don’t stop there. Glutathione also supports: Immune Modulation – Helping the body respond appropriately to infection or overactivity Liver Detoxification – Safely clearing out heavy metals, alcohol, and chemical toxins Hormonal Balance – Particularly helpful for women in perimenopause or menopause Daily Recovery – Reducing the impact of radiation, EMFs, stress, and poor sleep As Dr. Gina notes, “This isn’t a one-size-fits-all miracle pill—but it is one of the most powerful tools we have for prevention and healing.” More Than a Product—A Purpose While Dr. Gina’s science-backed formula is helping people feel better every day, her deeper mission is far more expansive. Through her Brain Health and Mental Wellness Foundation, she envisions a future where mothers and children can access healing spaces, education, and tools to reset their nervous systems and reclaim vibrant health. “My dream is to create a retreat center that integrates regenerative agriculture, animal therapy, biohacking, and nutritional support,” she says. “Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks are the first step—because I believe this product can help fund what’s really in my heart.” A Final Word: Trust the Journey Dr. Gina’s path wasn’t linear. Over the course of two decades, she faced roadblocks, sleepless nights, and moments of doubt. But the deeper the challenge, the stronger her commitment grew. Now, with a product she’s proud to give her own family—and a purpose that extends far beyond sales—she’s turning her vision into reality. “This formula was divinely inspired,” she says. “I created something I know helps people. And I’m just getting started.” Check Out Dr. Gina’s interview on Holistic Health with Melissa Armstrong Here!

Balancing Hormones for Optimal Sexual Health: Insights from Dr. Gina Nick

When it comes to women’s health, hormones play a crucial role in everything from mood and energy levels to sexual wellness and overall vitality. On a recent episode of Between the Sheets, Dr. Gina Nick, a leading integrative medical expert and CEO of Natural Health Products, joined Dr. Stephanie Zwonitzer to discuss the profound impact of hormone balance and detoxification on a woman’s well-being. Hormone Balance: A Key to Thriving Throughout a woman’s life, hormonal changes are inevitable—from puberty to pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause. Dr. Gina emphasized that achieving optimal health is not just about supplementing what’s missing, but also about ensuring the body can effectively metabolize and detoxify hormones. “Hormones impact everything—mental health, physical health, sexual health, skin, aging, even protecting the brain from diseases like Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Gina. How to Test for Hormonal Imbalances One of the biggest challenges women face is recognizing when hormones may be out of balance. Dr. Gina suggests working with a functional medicine physician, an endocrinologist well-versed in hormone therapies, or a naturopathic doctor. Some key hormones to test include: Estrogen – The hydration hormone, crucial for skin elasticity, vaginal lubrication, and cognitive function. Progesterone – The calming hormone that influences anxiety, sleep, and bone density. Testosterone – Essential for libido, muscle mass, and overall energy. DHEA – A master hormone that supports immune function, vitality, and sexual health. Cortisol – The stress hormone that, when imbalanced, can lead to fatigue, anxiety, and weight gain. With advances in medicine, women can now order at-home hormone testing kits, sometimes even using their FSA or HSA accounts to cover the cost. Bioidentical Hormone Therapy vs. Lifestyle Changes Dr. Gina describes hormone replacement therapy as “the cherry on top” and recommends first making lifestyle modifications such as: Prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods to support natural hormone production. Engaging in regular exercise, including strength training, to maintain bone density and muscle mass. Spending time in nature to naturally regulate cortisol levels and reduce stress. For those who need additional support, bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT) offers a natural approach to restoring balance. Unlike synthetic hormones, BHT mimics the body’s own hormones and can be customized through compounding pharmacies. The Role of Detoxification and Glutathione Hormone balance isn’t just about increasing levels of estrogen or testosterone—it’s also about how the body detoxifies excess hormones and environmental toxins. That’s where glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, comes in. Dr. Gina has developed Vitamin G™ Glutathione Pixie Sticks, a sugar-free supplement designed to support detoxification and enhance hormonal balance. “Some women notice improvements in hot flashes, sleep, and skin vitality just from taking glutathione,” she explains. The Truth About Testosterone Pellets While testosterone replacement therapy can be beneficial for women, Dr. Gina cautions against high doses in pellet form, as they can lead to unwanted side effects such as facial hair growth, acne, and increased aggression. “Less is more,” she advises. “We can always add more, but once it’s in your system, you have to ride it out.” A Holistic Approach to Sexual Wellness Dr. Gina’s parting advice for women seeking to enhance their sexual health and overall well-being? Spend time in nature. “Taking even 10 minutes to connect with nature each day helps regulate cortisol, boost energy, and serve as a form of self-care—something essential for sexual health.” Women no longer have to suffer through perimenopause and menopause symptoms in silence. By getting the right tests, working with a knowledgeable provider, and making lifestyle changes, it’s possible to reclaim vitality, confidence, and sexual wellness at any stage of life.
